The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) forecasts Guinea’s 2019 paddy rice production at 2.194 million tons, down about 6.2% from an estimated 2.340 million tons in 2018.
Harvesting of the rice crop will begin in October. The timely onset of the seasonal rains in March has supported the planting operations. Favorable moisture conditions reportedly benefitted crop development, and weeding activities are underway in most cropping areas.
The FAO estimates Guinea’s 2019-20 November-October) cereal imports (including rice) at an above-average level of 1.3 million tons, as traders are keen on replenishing stocks.
